We understand that being at the classroom door to meet all young people as they enter our classrooms provides the best start to a lesson. An individual smile and hello has a big impact. Meet and greet allows for a quick visual check-in and reminds each young person that they are welcome and valued.
Every day/lesson is a fresh start
All pupils are welcomed into the classroom
Latecomers are welcomed straight into the lesson (a quiet word about expectations can be issued later)
Classroom routines are followed, eventually without prompt (collecting resources, Chromebooks out but closed, young people ready to learn)
We all have the same goal - for pupils to be ready to learn - and recognise that some pupils will require additional support and check-ins. Our ready to learn strategy aims to ensure that:
Young people feel empowered as learners
Young people are supported to self-regulate
Young people are supported to strategise how to become ready to learn
Young people are supported and encouraged to self-reflect on their approach to their learning
We have developed a shared language that is used consistently across the school to strengthen support for young people.
A SEEMiS merit is awarded to all young people at the beginning of each lesson with the expectation that our school values (Respect, Responsibility and Achievement) will be met. The merit is removed if a warning is issued. A demerit is given if a further warning is issued.
Consistency is very important when issuing merits, to ensure the information that goes out to pupils and parents is accurate. Checking on SEEMiS is relatively straightforward: see here.
