Guardian Summaries provide carers and parents with a weekly summary of their child’s learning within Google Classroom. When carers and parents accept the invite to Guardian Summaries, they automatically receive regular email summaries for each of their children. Carers and parents can choose the frequency of the emails—daily or weekly—and can unsubscribe at any time.
The purpose of Guardian Summaries is to improve the frequency of information carers and parents receive about their child’s learning without increasing the workload of the teacher, to show what work is due and any work that is missing.
All lessons should be posted to Google Classroom to ensure effective communication with home.
The school will set up the emails and inform carers and parents. Carers and parents who sign up receive one email for their child, not individual emails for the class.
Guardian email summaries include:
Missing work—work that has a due date in the past (meaning the assignment is late at the time the email was sent)
Upcoming work—work that’s due today and tomorrow (for daily emails) or work that’s due in the coming week (for weekly emails) - assignments without a due date are not included
Class activity—announcements posted to the stream, assignments with a due date, and questions recently posted by teachers
To ensure consistency, we use the same approach and shared terminology:
Announcements are for information only - the young person does not need to complete work. Good for reminders about upcoming tests or visits. The can be shared with the whole class, or individuals within the class.
Assignments are posted when work is due. For clarity, assignments should begin with the prefix CLASSWORK, HOMEWORK or MATERIAL so that the young person, and their Parent/Carer understands what is expected.
Questions are short answer or multiple choice - good for entry or exit passes.
Paper based activities can be recorded in the classroom too. The teacher simply needs to create an assignment and then add in the grade once the task has been marked (to ensure accurate records but also to make sure that paper based work is not incorrectly marked as outstanding.
Both online and offline work is then automatically added to the Marks tab.
